Welcome back to "The 210 Fast Break," where we dive deep into the latest for our San Antonio Spurs. We’ve had a whirlwind of a week with three pivotal games, including a double-header against the Utah Jazz and a tough battle in Houston. While the Spurs are showing incredible promise and sitting comfortably in the second spot in the West with 31 wins, a familiar foe is starting to haunt our second halves: the dreaded third quarter.

A Tale of Two Halves: Dominating the Jazz

Tonight’s victory against the Utah Jazz (126-109) was a statement win, but it wasn't without its hurdles. After a strong first half that saw the Spurs up by 12 points, that "dreaded third quarter" hit. The Jazz outscored the Spurs by seven, even momentarily taking the lead.

However, the fourth quarter was a completely different story. The Spurs found their rhythm, clicking on all cylinders to pull away. De'Aaron Fox was the star of the night, dropping 31 points with incredible efficiency (10-for-13 from the field). Victor Wembanyama continued his double-double streak with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Keldon Johnson added a solid 21 points while holding his own defensively against Nurkić.

The Houston Heartbreak

The momentum from our first Jazz win (a 119-105 victory on the 19th) hit a snag in Houston two nights ago. Despite being up by as many as 16 points entering the second half, the Spurs crumbled in the fourth quarter. It was a shooting nightmare; the team went 0-for-13 from beyond the arc in the final period.

Wemby struggled significantly in this outing, going 0-for-7 from three and 5-for-21 overall. While Champagnie kept us in it with 27 points, the collective 39% shooting from the field was the ultimate undoing in the 111-106 loss.

Wemby’s All-Star Ascension

Despite the ups and downs, the biggest headline this week is Victor Wembanyama being named an All-Star starter. In our first matchup against the Jazz on the 19th, he celebrated the news with a season-high seven three-pointers and 33 points. He becomes one of only six Spurs in history to earn a starting spot in the All-Star game—a well-deserved honor for a player who is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Looking Ahead

The talent is there, and the wins are piling up, but the inconsistency in the second half—specifically that third quarter—is the next big hurdle for Coach Pop and the squad. Whether it’s halftime adjustments or just keeping the energy high, the Spurs need to find a way to make the second half as dominant as the first.

Rising Stars and Key Players

Keep an eye out for Carter Bryant, who is making waves as a rookie with his defensive intensity. His contributions could be pivotal as the season progresses. Additionally, we eagerly await the potential return of Devin Vassell and Luke Kornet. Their consistency is something we surely miss.

Upcoming Games and Broadcasts

The Spurs are headed home to face the Pelicans at 6 PM CST on Sunday, January 25th. You can catch the game broadcasted on FanDuel Sports Network and 1200 AM WOAI. This matchup will be crucial for maintaining our position in the standings.

Final Thoughts

As we reflect on the week, it’s clear that the Spurs have the potential to be a formidable team. With the right adjustments and a focus on consistency, we can overcome the challenges that lie ahead. The excitement is palpable, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season unfolds.
