The San Antonio Spurs' undefeated run to start the season has ended, with the team picking up their first loss against the Phoenix Suns, 130-118. The loss, detailed in an episode of the "210 Fast Break" podcast, moves the Spurs' record to 5-1.

According to the report, the Spurs "didn't look so hot" and struggled offensively, seeming to have "a lid on the basket". Though the team was getting the shots they wanted, they were not falling.

Key Performers and Struggles

The Spurs' offense was led by Stefon Castle, who finished with 26 points on 10-for-16 shooting, adding 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Keldon Johnson also had a strong offensive night, scoring 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting.

However, other key players struggled to find their rhythm:

  • Victor Wembanyama: Finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds, shooting 4-for-14 from the field and 1-for-5 from three-point range.

  • Devin Vassell: Scored just 4 points, shooting 2-for-9 from the field and 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.

  • Harrison Barnes contributed 13 points, while Champagnie added 9.

As a team, the Spurs committed 14 turnovers and generated only 21 assists.

Suns' Offensive Showcase

While the Spurs struggled, "everything" the Phoenix Suns shot "just kept falling". The Suns were led by Devin Booker, who posted a double-double with 28 points and 13 assists. Booker was efficient, shooting 10-for-15 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from three.

The Suns' supporting cast also "shot really well," with multiple players scoring in double figures:

  • Grayson Allen: 17 points

  • Dunn: 17 points

  • O'Neale: 11 points

The Suns' ball movement was a key factor, as they recorded 34 team assists compared to the Spurs' 21.

A Silver Lining from the Bench

Despite the loss, the podcast highlighted "good news" in the performance of the Spurs' bench unit. With the starters pulled late in the fourth quarter, the bench players—including Daniel Jones Garcia and Carter Bryant—showcased "phenomenal" defense and energy.

This unit outscored the Suns 40 to 28 in the fourth quarter alone. After being down by approximately 22 points, the bench cut the final deficit to 12. This strong display of depth was called "reminiscent" of past successful Spurs teams.

Injury Update and Roster Notes

The game also saw an injury to Dylan Harper, who exited early with an ankle injury and was deemed unfit to return. The podcast host noted this was a smart move by the staff, as there is "no point in pushing" injuries this early in the season. Harper is expected to miss the upcoming game against the Lakers.

It was also noted that the Spurs are still without several key players, including De'Aaron Fox, Kelly Olynyk, Luke Kornet, and Jeremy Sochan. The return of these players, particularly Fox, is expected to take the team to a "completely different level".

Looking Ahead

The Spurs' next game is a road test against the Lakers on Wednesday. This game may feature the return of Luka Dončić from injury. The "210 Fast Break" host stressed that this is a "big one," as the Spurs need to "send a message" that this team is different from last year's.

Following the Lakers, the Spurs will face the Houston Rockets in an NBA Cup game. The host expressed confidence in the Spurs' chances, stating the Rockets "don't have much depth" and that the Spurs' bench will "kill their bench".

The upcoming Lakers game will be broadcast on ESPN, Fanduel Sports Network, and on the radio at WOAI 1200 AM.
